The origins of 4/20 as a day for marijuana appreciation trace back to a group of California high schoolers in the 1970s, known as the "Waldos." They used "4/20" as a code for smoking marijuana, which eventually spread internationally, largely due to the band the Grateful Dead. Despite common misconceptions, 4/20 is not a police code for "marijuana smoking in progress," nor does it originate from Bob Dylan's song "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35." The term gained further popularity when it was used in High Times magazine, solidifying it as a recognizable code for marijuana users worldwide.
